1 and 2 Character Domains under .FR in Landrush Phase

The extension of registrations within the French domain includes registering names that consist of one or two characters. Such names are now available to general public and can be acquired based on a sliding pricing scale.

Until now, 1 or 2 character domain names could only be registered by rights holders during the Sunrise phase, with 111 domains consisting of 1 and 2 characters were registered in total. The Landrush phase commenced on 16 February and will end on 17 March. Until then, the short domains can be registered by anyone at prices going down every week over a period of one month.

The sliding scale pricing system has been adopted in order to prevent the immediate privatisation of valuable short domain names by resellers. The starting price of 15,000 euros per domain name will be gradually reduced to 100 euros in the fourth week. As long-term investments, domain names should be available at cost levels corresponding to the advertising market prices.

The final General Availability phase will begin on March 17, 2015 and will allow any interested party to purchase the short French domain names that are still available at the current rate.

In order to register any domain name under .FR extension, an applicant must be based within the European Union or EFTA.
