The local agent will be the legal holder of the domain, and as per Japanese law, the agent is liable for any form of infringement associated with the domain name, including website or email activities related to it. Consequently, the agent insists on retaining control of the DNS, and this requirement cannot be waived under any circumstances. However, the agent does permit forwarding of the domain. The optimal solution for clients lacking a local presence is to register both a .CO.JP domain (via the Trustee Service) and a .JP domain, subsequently forwarding the .CO.JP domain to the latter. If you are committed to establishing a long-term business presence in Japan, we recommend viewing the Trustee Service as a temporary solution and initiating the process of registering a local company. Upon registration of the local entity, the agent will transfer the domain name to the newly formed Japanese company in exchange for a reasonable transfer fee. Six-Month Reservation Option: An alternative solution is available, allowing you to register your domain name in the name of a 'soon-to-be-registered Japanese company'. This type of registration enables immediate activation of the domain name under your own DNS/nameservers. Such a preliminary reservation is valid for six months, after which the Japanese company must be fully registered and documented; otherwise, the domain will be cancelled and subsequently blocked for an additional six months.
